After being very warmly welcomed with the traditional 'lace' (fresh native flowers) the team were shown around Bohol. Our hosts proudly spoke of their city and the commerce which is based around tourism, agriculture and fishing.
Day 4
Arrangements were made to visit the University of Bohol and the team met with the faculties of Nursing, Education, Commerce, Criminology and Law. There were opportunities to speak to the Deans of the faculties and interact with students. Each of the team were able to speak about their vocations, with students asking questions about Australia. Very interesting responses...particularly when a graduate teacher (4 year training) and police officer (degree in criminology) start at a beginning salary of just 180,000 pesos per year ($AU5000 approx!!)
After the University tour, our guests took the team to the Island City Mall for Ube (violet coloured) ice cream...which is only produced in Bohol. This was absolutely delicious and comes from a root crop which has a similar look to the aussie potato.
The team had dinner at a host's Miravilla Resort and were again invited to sing and dance to a local band that were playing!! A great time had by all!!
Day 5
Wednesday 16th February, brings us to our first presentation at the Rotary Club of Tagbilaran and the team is looking forward to this....however, the members want us to sing and dance 'before during and after' the presentation!! We are truly on a fiesta island!
The Rotary Foundation’s Group Study Exchange (GSE) program is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for businesspeople and professionals. The program provides travel grants for teams to exchange visits in paired areas of different countries. Team members experience the host country's culture and institutions, observe how their vocations are practiced abroad, develop personal and professional relationships, and exchange ideas.
