The GSE team continues to be amazed by the ongoing and differing cultural experiences each day. The team visited the Baclayon Church, built by the Jesuits in 1592....a very famous community church highly revered by the local community. We continued on our exciting journey and visited and 'held' Prony the python, (which eats a small pig each week!!), then the Butterfly Dome, went on the Loboc River Cruise and visited the famous 'Chocolate Hills'. The highlight, however, was 'getting up close and personal' with the smallest monkey in the world (and only found in Bohol)....the Tarsier!! This unbelievably 'cute' creature grows to no more than 6 to 8 cms in length and has a life span between 15 and 25 years depending if handled by humans. It can turn it's head 180 degrees in either direction and has only one baby per year and lives its life in family groups. It lives on insects and frogs and is a protected species. Just wonderful!
Later in the evening, the Loboc community honoured the Team by especially arranging for the Loboc Ambassador Band to entertain the group for an hour in the local community hall. The band members average 15 years of age and have won many international awards for their performances. The performance was magnificent. The music program in Loboc is assisted by grants from the Australian Government AusAid program. Another special moment.
The Team now gets to work assisting with the Medical Mission in the underprivileged village of Ubojan, Tubigon. More soon!
The Rotary Foundation’s Group Study Exchange (GSE) program is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for businesspeople and professionals. The program provides travel grants for teams to exchange visits in paired areas of different countries. Team members experience the host country's culture and institutions, observe how their vocations are practiced abroad, develop personal and professional relationships, and exchange ideas.
